My tour of NTUC Fairprice Warehouse

Level 3 of NTUC Fairprice's "Warehouse Club"
After hearing about the opening of this first ever Costco-like supermarket, I finally managed to find my way there over the weekend to NTUC Fairprice's Warehouse - Joo Koon.

I called before heading out there to enquire if exploring the warehouse was possible without a membership, and unlike Costco in Australia, it is possible. Entry is free and you are welcome to explore and view their offerings. If you do wish to purchase something, then you will need to purchase a membership (available on level 2).

Overall, the offerings are vast and they do sell many items like Costco (from what I have seen from Costco Australia). Items sold off pallets, in large quantities, and the like. Though it feels much smaller than expected, even though it is on two levels (it seems smaller than the big hypermart Giant Tampines and Ikea Tampines).

The prices and deals really vary though, and depends what you buy often, and how many you would normally buy. Personally, I found otak (grilled fish cake), yogurt, CP wantons are some items in my opinion to be quite cheap, although other basic items such as 30xEggs are priced relatively the same as you would find in your normal Fairprice supermarket. So it's worth checking it out if you have time to see what suits works best for you and your family.

Opening hours:
10.00 AM - 9.00 PM (Mon - Fri)
09.00 AM - 9.30 PM (Sat & Sun)

Membership fees:
$35 SGD for NTUC Union Members, $50 for non-NTUC Union members annually. Membership is only required to purchase items, you are welcome to explore as you like first before deciding.

Consumer protection in Singapore - CASE and the Lemon law

If you're new to Singapore or not aware, there are consumer protection organisation called CASE that manages and allows you to lodge complaints that you may have with Singaporean businesses. There is also a lemon law that protects consumers in Singapore.

Firstly, what is CASE?
Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that is committed towards protecting consumers interest through information and education, and promoting an environment of fair and ethical trade practices.

The type of work they do are: Campaigning and/or lobbying, Consumer Advice, Consumer Legislation, Dispute Resolution, Networking, Product Testing

Is it free? No.
It does cost money to lodge complaints ranging from $10.70 to $53.50 SGD depending on the monetary value of the claims. You also need to be a CASE member in order to have them advocate on your behalf, otherwise, the most they can do is only help you draft a letter to the retailer where you have the dispute. The membership costs range from $8.55 SGD per annum depending if you're a student, family, or ordinary member. Lifetime CASE memberships are available too at $428 SGD (inclusive of GST).

** - Students must be above 12 years of age

For updated fees and details, check https://www.case.org.sg/complaint_lodgeacomplaint.aspx

What is the lemon law?
The lemon law is quite interesting, it allows you as a consumer to make a claim for a defective product sold to you within 6 months of purchase.

As described on the CASE website, the Lemon Law came into effect on 1 September 2012. Provisions of the Lemon Law have been added to the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, with related amendments to the Hire Purchase Act and Road Traffic Act.

The Lemon Laws is a consumer protection law that provides remedies against defective goods (colloquially known as “lemons”), which fail to conform to the contract at the time of delivery, e.g. do not meet standards of quality and performance, especially after repeated repair. Such laws obligate sellers to repair, replace, or refund or reduce the price of those defective goods.

I am not a lawyer, but it's good to know that a law like this is around. After first learning about this, I would sometimes mention it when buying items at Singaporean retail stores. As it helps when they try to push completely unreasonable terms like no refunds and exchanges, when they know there is some layer of consumer protection. So it's good to know and do some more research around this so you can protect yourself as well.

Going through Malaysian Customs in Johor fast with Iskandar Malaysia's Automated Clearance System (MACS)

If you're frequently passing through Johor-Singapore, you may not have realised but there is a pass you can apply for that allows you to skip the normal immigration and go through a different automated immigration called, "MACS".

MACS stands for Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS). Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) has been developed to cater for fast-track immigration clearance for non-Malaysian investors, business persons and professionals.

It is basically like the automated clearance system that you use at the airport (if you're a Singaporean Citizen, Singaporean Permanent Residents or a Singaporean Employment Pass holder). The only downside as I have seen it so far, it is only available in Iskandar (Johor Bahru, Johor) Malaysia.

Eligibility:
MACS used to be available only to applicants who are involved with the development of Iskandar (Johor) Region Projects. For the past few years it has been expanded and now is available to all Singapore citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and holders of Singapore Long Term Visit Pass (including Employment Pass holders).

Where to apply?
I have been using this for the past couple of years and applied on the Malaysian side of immigration (the immigration at the causeway crossing at Woodlands-Johor). It is called, "MACS One Stop Center", so if you ask around on "where to get MACS", they will show you.

About the MACS pass:
Each pass only lasts a year. It's useful only really if you travel from Johor-Singapore often a this saves getting immigration stamps in your passport, and instead using the RFID (Radio-frequency identification) details in the MACS pass placed into your passport. It takes about 15-30 minutes to process, depending on the queues.

Note - this just fast tracks immigration but doesn't replace Visa requirements:
MACS is simply a form of fast-track facilitation and does not act as an immigration pass or visa. Visitors are still required to obtain visa (if applicable) and will be issued with relevant immigration pass. Singaporean Frequent Travellers are still required to obtain the relevant long term immigration pass.

Happy travelling!

24 hour Tim Ho Wan

Tim Ho Wan, the famous Michelin Star Dim Sum restaurant from Hong Kong that has been expanding recently in Singapore.

They just opened one up in Kallang (nearest MRT - Lavendar) and it's 24 hours.

#01-01/02/03 Aperia
Singapore 339511
Tel: (65) 6684 2000

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday and Public Holiday: 24 Hours

This is Tim Ho Wan from the Lavender Street angle. To the right of it is the monastery.

The entrance to Tim Ho Wan, and queue on a Saturday morning. It really starts getting crowded from 10am onwards.

A suite of buns, carrot cake, wonton laksa and sponge cake from the breakfast menu

Wonton from the laksa, it's not too bad.

They have a breakfast and supper menu in addition to their normal menu.

Here's a sample of the current Tim Ho Wan menu for you.

Insight into the Jetstar Club program - part two

This continues from the previous post where I aim to post the various deals that come through from the Jetstar Club (or Club Jetstar).

This post will feature some screenshots of the Club Jetstar offers and is deals shared only recently. I will share an example of the promotional email informing me of the update, along with the actual pricing of the deals from my simulation.

Test example - Flight from Singapore to Penang
I will use a flight from Singapore to Penang and back as an example. Purchasing the same flight during each sale without baggage.

  • Club Jetstar offer- Quoted price of $69 SGD, and after taxes, etc. Final pricing of $87 SGD

And non-club member promotions:

  • Friday Fare Frenzy offer- Quoted price of $59 SGD, and after taxes, etc. Final pricing - unknown but could be lower after taxes
  • "Return for free" promotion offer - Quoted price of $69 SGD, and after taxes, etc. Final pricing of $85 SGD

Current Winner - Return for free" (non-club member) promotion (though I will update this after I check and screenshot the Friday Fare Frenzy final pricing after Friday this week) for flying from Singapore to Penang.

This may vary route to route, so it's best to check, but overall the pricing does seem very close to each other.

I suspect the Friday Fare Frenzy (non-club member) or the annual only "Take a friend for free" Jetstar Club deal to offer the best fares (example details of the "Take a friend for free" are found in the earlier post here).

Promotion email informing me of the upcoming promotion - shared Nov 11

Day of promotion email - shared Nov 13

This Club Jetstar deal closed on Thursday Nov 14 and the next day the normal Jetstar deals were on offer. So if you wanted to compare this to the normal "Friday Fare Frenzy".

I hope that helps give you good insights into the program. I will share further thoughts on this down the track, as new deals are released by Club Jetstar.

For now, happy flying!

If you have missed it, part one of the series is here:
Insight into the Jetstar Club program - part one

Insight into the Jetstar Club program - part one

If you're like me you're probably wondering whether it's worth joining any of these budget airline clubs?

Tiger Airways, Jetstar, AirAsia all have a program that you can join, but is it worth joining?

So after ignoring the countless marketing, I decided to try one of the budget airline clubs.

The Jetstar Club membership will be the focus of this post, and I will look to cover the others in subsequent posts as well.

Anyway, the reason for this post, is if you were like me, you have been wondering:
  • Why should someone sign up for Jetstar Club?
  • What are the benefits?
  • What sort of club membership deals do they really have to offer?
  • How often do they share Jetstar Club deals?

Why should someone sign up for Jetstar Club?
It depends on how you fly and whether you're comfortable flying Jetstar. I will share why I signed up for Jetstar Club, and that is because I like Jetstar, having flown with them for years in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and into Asia to Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand. I also really like their flexible add-on plan though I buy this only when it makes sense (e.g., dates/time may change, I want food, etc.).

I find myself in Singapore, so the perspective of these posts will be from Singapore.

So I signed up for $39 SGD especially since they were offering a $40 SGD Jetstar voucher and I was planning to fly with Jetstar anyway. As the economics made sense, as I think that is pretty good to give this offering a try. (Though, it is important to note that the voucher you receive is not immediate, so if you're joining for this voucher, please note that it takes 1-2 weeks to arrive and you will have six months to spend it).

It'll cost me $39.99 SGD as an annual membership fee (after first 12 months).

What are the Jetstar Club benefits?
  • At least 4 member only Club Jetstar sale events, including Take a friend for free each year (Club member must book and be part of the traveling party)
  • $40 sign up voucher
  • Discounts on travel insurance (10% off) and hotels (5% off) sold through the Jetstar portal. Though I find these prices very similar to Agoda, Hotels.com prices (as well as the possible discounts available - if you have the right credit card promotions around)
How often are the Jetstar Club deals?
I have been a member since May 2014. So far I have received the following offers:

  • May 2014 - no Jetstar Club deals
  • June 2014 - no deals
  • July 2014 - Take a friend for free deal (three months after I joined - details below)
  • Aug 2014 - no deals
  • Sep 2014 - no deals
  • Oct 2014 - no deals
  • Nov 2014 - (four months later - details including screenshots on the next post)

What are the Jetstar Club deals like?
Deals can vary but they can be pretty good, as long as you know the right dates to travel.

Here's the July - "Take a friend for free" promotion prices (This was shared on July 9th and ended on July 11th)
